amazingly, i got this run on the 2nd take last night. recorded with a basic logitech messenger webcam (not PSeye), frame rate and sound are not ideal.. but it is certainly watchable.

not the best game i've had by any means, also not worst lol..

i used 2 revival potions which is disappointing, i can sometimes go the whole game without a revival. revival 1, embarrasingly, during the 2nd fight with krayken on round4, then again when i ran out of time in the ice cave.

i think i got all the secrets and locations of hidden items- if i have missed any- please let me know.

a quick game this one.. job done inside 43minutes. usually, it takes nearer 50mins but i spent less time in some levels due to low health and trying to 1cc. not a new high score, but a good run. 2.8million or something.

i killed every enemy at least once in every round, except a couple of jellyfish and squids in the underwater scene on round4- i left the level asap as i had an invincibility cloak that i wanted to wear during the boss fight (the cloak is on a timer, only lasts so long). the game was not dropping 67gold very often, therefore, i finished a with around 2000gold. my best high score run i had 2600gold i think. so there is much more to be earned than what you see. getting it on film though..lol..

anyway, i hope you enjoy this run.. go grab a beer or the ashtray (whatever you are into), and enjoy my video(s) which took around 6days to film!

volume is not great- turn your sound up for best results..

cheers and thanks for watching!

well done on the video.

i've never played this game before, so lots i don't understand. (which consoles was it converted to? pc engine? megadrive?)

i've only watched the 1st part of 3 videos. what's happening in the bits where it sounds like you are waggling the joystick to get some sort of bonus?? - would have been good to see the control panel too in the videos, perhaps?

ps- does youtube automatically chop the long video up for you or did you have to do that yourself?

will carry on with the other 2 parts. Thumbs Up

lol.. i had to chop the raw file into 3parts using windows movie maker. yeh, the frantic waggling of the joystick is to try score 65+golds. by jumping and waggling, you can manipulate a random drop of 65+golds instead of just 3gold or whatever.. this works even better if you have whirlwind magic (hence why i visit the magic shop 1st on round2 before collceting any coins)

it was converted to sega master system by sega, and the atariST, amiga and computers of the time by USgold im sure. i think the master system version (which is awesome!) is available on Wii Virtual Console.

i'll shoot the control panle next time once i get a better camera. if i had zoomed out to fit me and panel too, you would hardly make out what going on on screen..lol.. dodgy low res camera.

Good stuff, lots of hidden gold bits very useful Smile
Can see some bits where you usually get gold it's given you other crap instead. Annoyingly random what it gives you in some spots.

i had this game for the master system (very close conversion/port) when i was a wee laddie.. it was rock hard!.. seriously.. the master system version is brutal- no continues allowed! i would play for hours, and hours, and hours.. for weeks and months etc.. i eventually beat the game.. i remeber i used to record it on VHS even way back then! i would feed the sega through the VHS, and record the same channel i was playing!.. it worked well and i was able to lend it to pals along with the game when swapping carts..

i never knew a coin-op version existed until i 1st found mame back in 2000.. frm then, it has always been in my favourite lists along with the staples- sf2, g'n'g, dd, ffight, w'boy etc.. all my faves!.

i never managed to 1cc the arcade version until pretty long into my w'boy career, probably within the last 2 or 3 years since i got a jamma cab and been playing more frequently.

thanks for the comments!

@retroclininc.. thanks, i'll keep you in mind.

The Master System version was indeed awesome.

Wonder Boy 3 - The Dragon's Trap was my favourite though (also available on Virtual Console as both SMS and Turbo Graphx). It's too long and involved to have been a successful arcade game, but wow what a game. I've read a few reviews that reckon it to be the best SMS game. I still revisit it now for the odd day of Master System loveliness. Although I've never completed it! By the time I was old enough to actually understand what was going on and what I was meant to do, I simply never found the time or was too busy playing other games. It's a long game...

Anyway, good work Sharky. Very Impressive.

Thumbs Up
Put that in your PCB test rig and smoke it!

how close-a-conversion was the master system to the arcade then? cos though you had completed the master system version, you said it took you years to beat the arcade version afterwards.

it didnt take me years to beat the arcade version.. just ages to be able to 1cc it. the master system version was pretty darn close. i negelected to add, there was a 15year gap between the owning the master system then playing it again on mame.

no continues on the master system version. amazingly, i still knew my way around the level 12  maze all those years later when i came to play mame.

i tried the master system version again a few months ago. still rock hard! the MS game gives you very little.. little time, little health, little amounts of gold (you must spend very wisely). it took real dedication to get anywhere into the game. there is no 67golds in the MS game. but there was a cheat (press start/pause 45 times (or was it 100 times?), get 45gold coins), but it took ages to do the cheat as the pause function took a second or two, x100.. lol.. for little reward. it was handy for affording that pair of shoes though if you were a few coins short.

the fundamental skills of the game are pretty basic, virtually any gamer could become real good at it- you got.. left, right, jump, attack.  thats all.. same as most games of the era. but this game depends on learing the levels inside out, learning how to kill the bosses.. lose a life and it's game over- start again, brutal! then there is level 12..

you would spend months getting as far as level 12 only find it is a huge maze, lose a life- game over start again! i spent months in that maze. no internet back then, no magazine coverage either! brutal!

i think only kids could dedicate themselves to game like this. kids become adults.. adults new to the game have no time to learn it. kids today would not be interested. im from a select few wbml players worldwide im sure. restricted to those who knew the game from years ago. there are no new takers i dont think.

I'm getting in on this too!

I used to have the MS version too, and as I only had that and Hang On, I played the hell out of it. I ended up being able to complete it at will, but I only initially learned my way through the L12 maze by using a secret item. And without being too spoilery, after I'd memorised the maze, I took that item through the maze for the boss fight if I wanted a real challenge.

I never 1cc'd the arcade version - I used to get as far as the Sphinx pretty consistently. But the board is on my wish list, so I hope I'll get around to it it one day!
"Old School"? Son, I'm the school that burned down on the site where they eventually built the Old School.
