Some info on the system:

Looks like it was a shared mobo for all games, with enhanced audio etc.

From System16

Notes : In 1985 Konami decided that it was going to experiment with a new state of the art program storage system to replaced ROMs. This was called "Bubble Software".
Other manufacturers had already operated magnetic media (disks and tapes) instead of roms with some success, so Konami decided to make a modified version of their own new G400 BIOS system.
Bubble memory is non volatile electromagnetic writing/readable memory and was thought to be, at its inception, as a direct a quick replacement for floppy disks.
Unfortunately Bubble Memory proved to be extremely susceptible to electromagnetic fields (not great for something in a arcade enviroment) and were also more expensive than standard ROM based boards. For this reason the project never got beyond its first couple of games.
Anyone who still has one of these systems in their possession and still has it working today is incredibly lucky...
You can tell bubble soft games by the startscreen "wait while system heating up", because the BM needs to be heated up to between 30-40 degrees to work properly.

From Wikipedia

The Bubble System is an arcade system board designed by Konami and used across many arcade games in the early eighties.

The Bubble System was supposed to have a unique new form of data storage for arcade-style video games. It used bubble memory cartridges, a sort of non-mechanical magnetic storage system. It was said to have a higher reliability than mechanical diskette or tape drives.

Konami used their new G400 BIOS for this project, and modified it a bit. The main CPU was a Motorola 68000 at 10 MHz. There was a separate Zilog Z80 for sound control, which drove two AY-3-8910s, a custom Konami SCC (K005289), and a VLM5030 speech synthesizer. It had a Scramble wiring harness.

A Bubble Memory game can be identified by its booting sequence. It displays a "warming up" screen, accompanied with a countdown timer and a small musical tune (called "Morning Music"). The reason this was implemented was because Bubble Memory had to be heated to around 30-40°C for it to work properly.

Bubble Memory was not a fully developed technology by the time it was used in the Bubble System, and as a result it is currently very rare to find a working Bubble System. The system proved to be unpopular because it had a high sensitivity to magnetic fields (which was not suitable for an arcade environment, with unshielded speakers and degauss coils), and were also considerably more expensive than ROM chip-based boards. Most games on this system were eventually ported to standard ROM chips, and the system was discontinued.

Still, Konami has made homages to the Bubble System in two recent games; with Morning Music being one of the playable tracks in Keyboardmania.[1], and the intro of Konami Classics Series: Arcade Hits featuring the song too.

Amazing thread. I find it really interesting that such a large established company completely dropped the ball when designing bubble hardware though; they were wrong on reliability versus mechanical disk drives (which still work great today) and so very, very wrong on designing something that would stand up to use in an arcade environment. Oddly, that makes finding them even cooler. Yesterday's mis-steps are today's awesome Big smile

Like Vectors and Lasergames! That combined with the availability of it all, the rarer or more obsolete the greater the appeal!

Great thread Muddy, sure looks like you're busy! What was the manufacturer of those GLOOP boards again? Willy Wonka? LOL They sure looks scrumptious!

How's the BB cab coming? Will you scan those marquees for any of the artwork?

They're LAN connectors for linking cabinets.

I'm curious to see what game this is. My first guess was Ground Effects but the PCB layout is very different to the production version.

Awesome stuff!!

I particularly liked the 1942 proto, very interesting how they layed out the board to have the big row of test points

The board is marked GX400 which is the number for Nemesis, even though the board layout is completely different.

Also, it has a VLM5030 speech synth chip ??. Smile

It will be interesting to see how the other games compare with the standard pcb versions, I think D said there was Road Fighter & Twinbee there as well.

Road fighter proto? I'll be keeping an eye out for more info on this one.

It's a Road Fighter 2 bubble memory cart, not the original game.

Yes; whatever happened to bubble memory.
Our teachers and lecturers in the early to mid-1980s kept saying "this is going to be the next big thing... bags of capacity, small size, cheaper and faster than hard-drives"...
... Never seemed to happen!
Cheers,

Ade

IBM stuck with hard drive technology and were able to develop it faster than bubble memory. I think is was when they released the "Winchester" drive that everyone else gave up on bubble memory developments.

Konami's use of bubble memory obviously came later, which makes it even more odd that they picked up on an already obsolete technology. I think hard drives were maybe a lot more fragile and expensive back then, and they wouldn't have needed all that capacity ?.

Edit : If you think about it, we are only just now catching up with SSD drives becoming popular. Even then they are still using the same interface that was designed for hard drives. In that respect, tablets and smart phones are way ahead of the game.

I'd like to chime in on some Unigame tested boards i got from D a while ago.
There are certainly some mysteries with all those old Electrocoin things. A real treasure trove :)

Anyway, 3 cps boards came to me:

1. Bootleg pang3
- With modded game code to run on a B17 C board
- Instead of the battery-backed B21 C board.

2. Suicided Captain Commando
- Nothing special about it really.

3. A board marked '3 Wonders'
- Battery backed B21 C board on it.
- Full of eproms

#3 was the most interesting one.
The board actually contained Carrier Airwing on the roms. But this game does not run with a B21 board. Also, the B21 still had its battery and (probably) encryption table on it. It seems unlikely that during the time this board was filled with eproms, someone knew the cps1 protection scheme? But the board did not work.

When i set about to convert this board back to 3 wonders i noticed a chip encased in some sort of plastic, on the bottom, between the program roms. The board was also heavily modded, so that some lines of the program memory went via this chip. Porchy and me deducted this must have been some PIC which modified game code on the fly, to work with the B21 board.

Proof of concept C board hack? Pet project? Engineer gone crazy? Capcom-supplied-mod?
CAW was not really a profitable game to convert a 3 wonders to, so i guess just another mystery from back in the days.. oh well :)

Ground Effects is about 2X bigger (the dump in MAME is from me).
I'd guess it is Under Fire or Gun Buster.
Some of those boards look a bit dodgy. I suspect not all of them are protos.
