    Posted: 07 May 2014 at 2:44pm
A couple of weeks back I finally managed to get my hands on an Atari System 2 shell, I haven't picked one up before as not only are they pretty damn hard to come by, but it won't fit through the rather annoying doorway in my flat, however this one was already half ripped apart and disassembled, so I thought this could be my best chance of having one of these and converting it into my Grail cab, a Championship Sprint. Big thanks to Bensonrad for dealing with my constant "should I shouldn't I's" and also to Muddymusic for giving me dibs on it!

Fortunately, and another great reason I couldn't let this one pass, is that Bensonrad lives about 20 minutes from me, so with a mate with a big car we went to Pick her up:

Back to the garage to flat pack it. One side was pretty much already off, but lots of screws and huge staples, came apart pretty easily though with a bit of gentle persuasion.

Up 4 flights to my flat, and to inspect

Overall not in toooo bad condition, there are some pretty sizeable holes to fill both tho, inside and out.

I decided that the white vinyl and sideart, although original would need to be replaced, so I hot air gunned it off and over the weekend managed to fill that massive hole, and a few of the big holes that are on the inside of the cab.

I also discovered that I was missing two parts of the cab, 1 is just not there, the upper part of the rear, above the back door. And this other part underneath the marquee assembly which has just been torn in half! I will need to get new pieces cut and re-vinyl them in black.

I also removed all of the metal work and the pedals, ready to go off to the powder coaters, I normally just do a sand and spray jobby which comes out fine, but this time I want to go the whole hog, and I also have a crap load of parts from the Taito space gun cab to get done as well.
Quick look at the condition of the pedalsConfused
The rest of the metal work is also slightly orange!

Up next will be getting the new wood cut and vinyled, then I can at least put the cabinet together and stand it up out of the way while I try and source the many many parts that are gonna be needed to put this thing back together! I've managed to source a few that are on their way, and will probably do a massive "wanted" post in a bit. But if anyone has any parts for a system 2 cab please Pm! Smile

I have reassembled half the jigsaw that was this cab  And this is where I'm at!

TBC.....

Awesome, congrats on finally getting one mate.Thumbs Up

Good luck finding the parts you're gonna need for it though. It could be quite a project!

I actually gave away a really nice Champ Sprint control panel on this forum, probably about 8-9 years ago. Wish I'd kept it hold of it now..... especially as I never even got a thanks from the guy who I posted it to (forget now who it was).

At least you'll never have to toy with the idea of selling this once it's done, unless you want to winch it down out of your window Big smile

Looking forward to the resto, it's great seeing beat up shells become fully operational cabs Smile

Had a go at the control panel last weekend,

Had ordered a repro CPO for it but on closer inspection I think i'm gonna keep the original on there for now, it has a few dings and scratches but I kind of like the battle scars!

The metalwork did need a bit of a respray though as it was rusting in parts,

After a quick blast with the spray paint and a light going over with a magic eraser.

Worst blemishes are right at the front unfortunately, but I can live with it.

I then had a look at the wheels, pretty heavy rusting on these,

so I assembled my tools!

Gave them a full fat coke bath overnight, and the rust just slid off!

They have come out pretty nice, but there is still pitting unfortunately, where the rust once was :(. If anyone can recommend a way of removing this, im all ears!

Right, finally got some decent time to spend on this today, and thanks to rog's small package (Wink) that arrived with some great speakers and buttons, I could proceed. Thanks mate, Thumbs Up

First up was refabricating the top part of wood that was torn off, annoyingly its probably the most complicated bit of wood on the cabinet, as it has the speakers in, the long speaker grill, and a hole for the glass, and the t molding at the front.

Here is what I have to work on. Somewhere along the line, this bit had just been ripped away

Fortunately I took a lot of pics when I was at Bensonrads last week, and Jodo has been very helpful with my "can you just take a pic of this bit" requests, so I had a good idea, but it was still a fair amount of guesswork.

First, I had the wood cut to size, then i cut a slot for the special bit of t molding that has a gap either side, one to hold the marquee glass, and the other so the speaker grill can fit. I didnt have the router bit, so I went with a saw, and it worked out ok.

Then I routed a slot for the glass to go in, then cut the holes for the speakers and routed out a bit so they could be sunk in and not touch the grill.

Offered it up, and so far so good.

With the speakers fitted, i removed them and applied black vinyl to the wood, then attached the speaker grill

With this part done I could finally put the other half of the cab back together, as my view for the last 4 weeks has been:

So onto my mangled coffee table, that doubles as a black and decker workmate Shocked

New part of wood in place.

Other side back on.

Replacing the missing part of wood for the marquee light:

And finally I can get the cab upright! Lots more to do but feels good to get it upright again.

Such a huge cab! Makes the little cabaret look like a toy!

getting there, slowly but surely.

you could do it down the corridor on the landing. Wink then just kick the saw dust down the stairs when you're done.

If it's just surface rust, it can be scratched off with your nail and t-cut, if it's real rusted nothing will work

All the rust has come off nicely, its just the pitting marks that are still there. Not sure what if anything can be down about them.
