Here's a 1-Life playthrough of the first loop of Gradius. The first loop is pretty easy tbh. I've made to halfway through the 3rd loop in the past but I'm way out of practice now.. There are some players I saw from back in the day that would spend hours on a single credit just looping the game over and over, awesome stuff. It's probably blasphemy saying this but I personally feel that the Gradius series is better than the R-Types. Reason being the Gradius games feel a lot less rigged and you can improvise and showboat more without getting punished like you would in the R-Types'. Also the music is just way better! I still love the R-Type series, though.

Gradius is way better than R-Type, and has as always been.
Please don't sell me anymore stuff!

I'd have to agree with you on that too.

But then I am biased as my first ever shooter I ever played on was Scramble in the arcades. Wink

Just watched through this one, excellent play as always. I never made it very far on this game, in fact I never got very good at shooters full stop. I'm just about ok with Parodius but that's my limit!

Are you working on the next one now?

Vib: Amen brother :)

Uberpixel: Ah nice. I totally forget that Scramble was a Konami game. There were so many clones of that in the Spectrum weren't there :)

Jonwarby: Cheers buddy.

MuddyMusic: Cheers Muddy. Yeah, I think shooters are probably the hardest genre of 2D arcade game, manipulating the ship do do exactly what you want and to do tight dodges is a skill in itself, especially some of the harder vertical shoot em' ups. Gradius 1's first loop is pretty easy though as far as hori shooters go.

I'll probably do another platformer next, they're generally pretty easy. I'm thinking of rotating the screen for some vertical action after that :)

Good shout, how about a bit of Commando or Mercs. I've played a fair bit of both but never finished them and would like to see them nailed

Ah! I totally forgot about those.. Whenever I think of vertical games I automatically think of space shooters with vert games. I wouldnt mind giving Mercs a go, I used to love the Megadrive version. I remember it having really cool music on level3.

Hah thanks mate. Ah I see you have it as your avatar. How many loops can you do? I have been thinking of trying to do it a few more times, first loop is a bit too easy isn't it :)
