Woot, picked up the HD4890 from the PO this morning
![]() I wanted to check the physical size of it before ordering anything else. I'm planning on building a MicroATX based PC is a MicroATX tower. I want to use it on my Astro City, Pony and E2 as well as my HD Virtua Tennis 4 cabinet so I want it in a small case where it'll be protected and easy to move around. I'm planning on installing groovymame for the MAME side of things but I'm also going to install Windows on it so I can play some Steam/PC games it too. With that in mind I've been looking at PC Part Picker and I'm currently looking at the following: ASRock Mod 1150 H97M Motherboard Intel Core i5 i5-4690K Quad Core 3.5GHz CPU G.Skill 8GB PC3-14900 RAM Corsair Builder Series CXM 750W Modular 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX/EPS PSU Silverstone SST-PS08B Precision Midi-Tower Still need to choose a ~250GB SSD and a 1TB HDD Most of it is overkill for the majority of MAME games but I want a fast processor for the Windows side of things too. The PSU is a little overkill as http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine recommends a ~380w PSU for those components but for the difference in price I would rather have something more powerful in case I upgrade the GPU or anything later. I'm looking at a that Silverstone case as it's fairly slim (168mm) for a Mid-Tower whilst not being crazy thin. The case will nicely fit in my E2 which has a maximum width of ~195mm to play with. I'll need to build a little platform for the Astro for it to fit in properly. |

What version of Windows are you going to install, Franco? Tiny XP?
I plan on going with Windows, too, as I'm not very experienced with Linux.

I spoke to 2huwman a while back about running groovymame and windows and he said the best thing to do is to install groovymame to a USB stick as he did and then just install Windows as normal. You can change the BIOS to boot from the USB first and so run groovymame or if you take the USB stick out then it will boot to Windows. I'm no linux (or MAME!) expert but from the sounds of things groovymame is pretty easy to install to USB.
It's one of the thinnest cases I've found so far that has active cooling. I was looking at the upcoming Silverstone RVZ02 which has the GPU mounted parallel to the motherboard but the case only has passive cooling and it's not really suitable for putting inside a cabinet. You can get the cube shaped cases but I think I would prefer a slim one that will stand up in my cabs nicely. I'm open to suggestions though ![]() |

I've got v2 of the miniKAB (Kick-ass Arcade Board!) going using the newish AM1 platform. Had to buy the parts separately and put it together, but it's a lot easier installing a CPU than I was expecting!
The bad news is that the integrated GPU isn't fully supported by the linux open source drivers yet. I got it to output a 15khz picture, and managed to get one or 2 games going, but it's laggy and crashes. It's a shame, as it was running at less than 20 watts. Hopefully the drivers will be updated and it'll be supported in newer versions of GroovyArcade. But the good news is that even with an external GPU, it consumes very low power. It hits 29 watts in the first few seconds of startup, but then 20 watts or lower in the menus, and 25 in game. I had to overclock the athlon CPU to 2.1ghz, but all the cps 1 & 2, neogeo, and sega system 8 & 16 etc games work perfectly. I get the feeling there's not a lot of headroom though, and it seems marginally less powerful than the much older v1 core2duo system (although I'm sure that's a lot more power hungry (I'd guess 50 watts, but haven't measured it). So it's pretty close to the plug 'n' play dream. I've been running it off my JAMMA PSU without any problems. I've got some better cabling on order to tidy it up, and a smaller audio amp coming. I've been setting up some of the console emulators (SMS, MD, and SNES all work). The performance is more variable than MAME. most work fine, but have the odd hiccup. ![]() The GPU & CPU cost £70, so not cheap, but not too bad. I'll do some more pictures when it's finished!

Here's a few more pictures of the finished v2 miniKAB:
![]() The JAMMA edge passthrough adapter takes the 12v to the mobo, and the 5v to the little sound amp. It runs at 25 watts, and I've had it running for many hours off a standard PSU which provides 2.5 amps on the 12v line. So in theory, up to 30 watts should be OK? It would be nice if the discrete GPU wasn't needed, but that might change with updates to GroovyArcade. Most of the hassle has been setting MAME up properly. I've finally stripped out all the Mahjong/Casino/Titillation, and set up lists for my favourite genres: ![]() ![]() Also got lists for Megadrive, Master System, SNES, and Favourites. So it does everything I wanted it to, and only needs plugging in to the JAMMA edge connector. It starts when I power the cab up, and there's no need to shut it down separately, so just unplg the cab when you're finished! I might use and SSD instead of a USB memory stick to make it a bit quicker to load up. Takes about 35 seconds from power on to the game lists currently. A fair amount of hassle, but worth doing if you want a superior multiboard experience! |

That's a fantastic effort and I appreciate all the effort that has gone into it. I found it a ball ache form start to finish !
I must admit I played with groovy arcade but went for full XP in the end on my own box with groovymame. For those who want to use XP and want some additional hints on how to set the bios to boot and what else you need additional to XP then feel free to browse through this. http://www.jammaplus.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=35665&title=how-to-convert-a-jamma-cab-to-mame-in-100-steps Someone is chucking me a free cabinet soon so might look at this instead. Awesome work! How much did this all cost to build, approximately?
P.S. that sound amp is tiny! Where did you find it?

Thanks guys. This set up would cost a good £100+. I had some of the parts already so that helped. I'll update the shopping list above. The sound amp was off eBay. Very small but plenty loud enough.

An updated parts list would be appreciated, cheers. I've just bought a sound amp (same as the one currently in your list) which I'm fitting to a service panel that's going inside the coin door.
![]() P.S. I never saw that small amp when looking on ebay. Their search engine sucks! ![]() Edited by big10p - 22 February 2015 at 11:06am |

Nice looking amp, just needs a 12v feed.
Guess the interesting thing is if you dont want to hack your Jamma connection then you could take that direct of your jamma psu. As if you have a pc and a jpac you dont actually need to have the jamma psu switched on. I.e in my cab its switched off all the time. I have power to monitor, power to PC and then power to some hacked speaker amp ! |

![]() Watched that terrible Alexander bad day film last night, seems to have cursed me ! After playing on my cabinet today after reading this my power supply in my shuttle pc has just decided to break. Took the sod apart and there are no fuses in it and none of the leads out have power. Not looked on ebay but expeting the specific units to be bloody expensive. So maybe a dilemma of finding power supply or donor PC to put my stuff in or starting again with something like this. Bloody neo geo cab and my motherboard started playing up as well .Can they hear you scream in hell. Went from green screens, clicking sounds, to no bloody sounds, to working , thank god. I do sometimes wonder if its worth the effort ! Moan over. I may be in touch and update the 100 steps with a new build ! I hope I get he shuttle working though as is set up perfect and has a arcade vga in it ! Edited by venom - 22 February 2015 at 6:50pm |

Hope you get your shuttle sorted out venom. As long as you've got a compatible GPU, you can't really go wrong with groovyarcade. Getting the game lists sorted out was the biggest hassle for me, but now I know my catver.ini from my clrmamepro! And Romlister is a great program if you want to strip out all the rubbish. Got my mame set down to 10gb from 35!

I never knew about the groovyarcade distro. That's great news.
Saves me going through the XP setup on my core2quad pc I've been keeping for mame. does it auto set it to 15k? Mine will be going in a Naomi using a 31k screen.

Yeah, you can set it to 31khz in the initial setup. I've only got 15khz screens so have never tried it, but should be fine.

which version of groovyarcade are you running? There only seems to have been beta releases since 2013.
I've got the Feb 2015 beta and the last 2013 final release.

I've got an old shuttle with an AGP arcadeVGA card in it - will the ISO work with it and set to 15Khz out of the box or will I have to setup on a TFT first?

I've just installed the newest beta and it's been solid. It's got the newest version of mame (0.158). If you're running a low powered system, then you can download and install an older version of groovy mame through the setup menu. 0.152 seems to run a lot faster. |

Should do. You might have to hit enter to select 15khz when it boots off the CD. I don't think it can output at 15khz at that stage so you'd be doing it blind. |
