How did you fix the monitor "jiggling in the end" ?

I haven't. I'm just using a lower res, progressive mode at the moment.

Quick update if you're thinking of trying a mobo with integrated nvidia ion graphics. 2nd gen works well. First gen, not so much! I could only get a sub set of cps2 games to work on the first gen, whereas everything I tried worked on the second gen.

I've just finished v3:

A bit hard to see in the picture, but the main differences from v2 are:

  • A very nice Jamma passthrough adapter from FrancoB - it takes the power from the Jamma edge connector to the picoPSU & the sound amp
  • different 5v sound amp that uses header pins and screw connectors, so i don't have to learn how to solder!
  • faster USB 3.0 drive
  • less ram - 1gb seems plenty
  • the sound is taken from the header pins rather than the headphone jack, so it's neater and doesn't get in the way of the DVI cable
  • different radeon X600 GPU, which doesn't have the rotation bug the other one had (it ran vertical games at half speed on horizontal monitors).
  • new, smaller JPAC
I stuck with AM1 & athlon processor as that was the best low power option i could find overall. The boards with NVIDIA ION graphics were good too, but you had to be careful about which generation of ION you used.

My main thing to do now is to work out how to up the performance of some games that nearly work at full speed (e.g. Moonwalker). Lowering the sound quality should help, but that's a line I wasn't going to cross!

I'll be selling this on at some point, so keep an eye out on the for sale section. Sadly, it cost almost £200 to assemble, but a quarter of that was on the new JPAC!

Good job! Smile

I see you have yours connected to s Super Gun. Have you tried it in your cab? You may find you have a couple of issues, as I did:

- Bad audiovisual noise/interference. I tracked the main cause of this down to a grounding loop. I could read a slight voltage on the metal mobo housings. I grounded this to GND on the JAMMA connector (using one of Franco's great adapters Thumbs Up). That improved things a lot!

- The lack of a +5v load on the JAMMA PSU caused the voltage regulation to go screwy. I was only getting about 9v on the 12v rail! I was also getting strange, intermittent speaker hum. I fixed these issues by wiring two 5ohm resistors (each pulls 1A) to the +5v on the JAMMA adapter, acting as a dummy load.

I'm still getting slight video noise which I'm going to see if I can clear up with some clip-on ferrite rings, and mabe make my own, shorter VGA cable.

Oh, and I recently got a new JAMMA PSU (not specifically for this project) which has a 4A 12v rail. I tried powering the board via JAMMA and it works fine, but got a whole bunch of new audiovisual issues, so I went back to using the separate 12v adapter.

P.S. Is Moon Walker particularly demanding? I just tried it and it runs 100%. I've been pleasantly surprised by this little Core2duo. It was advertised as 2.2GHz, I think, but is actually running at 2.53GHz. Oddly, it produces very little heat. Even after a long MAME session the heatsink is cold and I can just feel a little heat on the underside of the mobo, directly below the core. I'm sure the HS fan isn't needed - removing it would make my rig totally fanless/quiet. Smile

I wanted to try and overclock the CPU but unfortunately the BIOS isn't up to it. Cry

Yes, I've played it mostly in my cab, but try to reduce the wear and tear when I can! Thankfully, no interference. Really beautiful picture. I got the shortest, best quality VGA cable i could get away with, so maybe that does help.

The Core2Duos seem to be really good - Moonwalker is fine on the little C2D board I've got, but slows down on this one. I think it's just down to how optimised the individual drivers are in mame for the different hardware. It does also matter which version of MAME is used - so I've got both 152 and 158 on mine.

Did you get the new 12v 4a JAMMA PSU from ebay from jcha9590? I got one too as a spare, but haven't tried it yet. Seemed a pretty standard model, but cheap for being a UK seller.

I got my PSU from Arcade World.

Apparently MAME works better with Intel CPUs so maybe that makes a difference to performance, too. I was surprised to find DoDonPachi runs full speed on mine, although other Cave games like Ibara and Deathsmiles chug a bit in places. I haven't tried playing with any MAME settings yet, though.

The video noise is quite subtle. Try running a game and pausing it on a mostly black screen, such as the Neo-Geo logo screen. Turn the brightness up in MAME and see if you can see any artifacts or scrolling patterns.

I've just tried hooking my sound up to the mobo header, but I'm not getting any sound. In the following diagram, I have AUD_FPOUT_L and AUD_FPOUT_R wired to the "speaker +" terminal on the JPAC, and the AUD_GND pin wired to the "speaker -" terminal. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Yeah, you need to wire the audio sensor to ground (so that it thinks headphones are plugged in!). Or maybe it's the front I o plug. One of those anyway.

Ah, OK - I'll give it a try. Thanks.

[edit] Actually, I didn't need to wire either sensor pin. Just the L/R Return pins (worked with just one wired up, but I wired them both in, anyway. Smile)
