Actually i have enough space on the old `electronic plastic` to buy that Tron cab outright but i really need to get my Credit cards bills down a bit I now i will probably cause more head shaking and disapproval here...but to me there are very few cabs worth 1K and i cringe to see them more expensive than that especially on `Traders web pages`(i mean no disrespect to fellow members who have their own such pages, obviously there is a profit margins and personal opinions i understand that of course). The modern cockpit/sitdown cabs are pricey of course but you can even get the occasional twin cockpit for 500 at Swallow Amusements. The only games to me worth close to 1K or more are mainly US cabs Tron,Computer Space,Pong,Any Duramold,Darius(triple screen),Robotron and i dont want to sound as i am contradicting myself here but a Defender cocktail is beautiful as much as do not like the game. There are probably others like Joust cocktail but i dont expect to see those anywhere but in photos. What i am trying to say is that there are not many here in the UK that i would pay 1K for and i am far from tight fisted. |

I looked at the Tron machine that was for sale near me on ebay, Like you guys say it's one cool looking machine, not to keen on the game tho, sooner have the discs of tron, that is top game I understand discs of tron should of been part of the original tron game but time, costs etc stopped it and they made a seperate machine |

Its nice to hear stories from the old times that remind me of myself. Blagging money from helping people on the bandits, fiddling a few ops with dodgy devices, banging the 10p pushers in the right place so as not to set the alarm off. Wow I wish I could go back there now! With regards to my fave games, having grown up in the seaside town of Withernsea (North East) I was in the muggys as we called em virtually every day between 1983ish-1988 when I moved a bit further in land and could only play them when I went to visit my grandparents. Most of my faves I would say come from that era then and I remember fondly those that I was particularly good at and could impress the crowds of holiday makers! Let's see, without doubt a cool game to play with its awesome music was Spy Hunter this became my first dedicated cab, although it did take almost 2 years of owning before it actually worked properly! Due in the main to me being technically sh*t. Many thanks to Chris hardy for finally getting me sorted though! Also the following were awesome to play in multi-player mode. Many an afternoon wasted away playing Super Sprint (another of my dedicated cabs), Hyper Sports, Hyper Olympics, Bubble Bobble, Tehkan world cup. I know Tehkan wasn't everyones cup of tea, but to me its still the best two player footy game ever in an arcade. You know the one with a track ball you had to spin furiously to run like f@@@ after the ball. I built up many a sweat on that one I can tell you. In fact I pretty much like most games that require some sort of physical stamina, as in the Hyper Olympics bash the buttons like a maniac. Alpine Ski was another good one for this when doing the Ski jump. Other classics I recall spending hours and hours on in my quest to be 'Best in With' would be Pac Land,Paperboy,Metro Cross,Double Dragon,Flying Shark,GunSmoke,Return of the Jedi. I did play some of the now regarded classics a bit but not as much as most of these although I can now appreciate how immensely challenging and playable Robotron is, Centipede I have also loved for a long long time and also have a dedicated cab. As some others have mentioned though I could never get into Defender as it was too damned hard Well I think I've mentioned most of my faves there, better go do SOME work before its time to go home. Danny

Should be able to guess it lol but my favorite is the afterburner cockpit
Mostly nostalgia reasons for that one also the first moving cockpit game i played and it scared the crapola out of me as a kid, its still a great game though I am also a fan of the r360, which i actually played once when i was about 14 years old. Also i am a fan of just about every other simulator out there, if its a simulator i like it!!!! |

Sara I never asked you this, but did you ever get any good at Afterburner, it always used to whoop me after the first few stages, I just couldn't get the hang of it, I gave up in the end it just used to eat money way too fast!!!! Regards Nick |

1942 - First shooter I really liked, flying over the sea and
islands, the feeling of progress getting to the next stage, the
'wingmen' power-ups, killing the boss... I dont know if these were
firsts for the genre, but it was the first time I had seen it and
carried on into my love of vertical shooters, but 1942 is one i keep
coming back to, nice simple progressive and atmospheric.
Ghosts'N'Goblins - Oh the atmosphere, the music, and the bastard difficulty. I remember the adrenaline fuelled euphoria of getting 'further' - past a boss, onto a new level. These two games seemed to be everywhere I went on holiday as a kid, they were the first two boards I bought and the two I'll always keep, even if I mainly play them on emulators these days. Double Dragon also holds a special place as the only game I ever finished in the arcade, using 60p to do so. Unfortunately I now realise it is rubbish. Space Harrier, R-Type, Salamander and Shinobi were also arcade favorites but these blur with home computer versions as the arcades started to get too expensive and my attention became more interested in the timeless game of getting girls to take their clothes off ;) No not Sam Fox strip poker for the atari ST ;p well, not exclusively. |

Cor blimey, too many to choose from. But My all time fav has to be Space Harrier sim. (shock horror) Why?
Phew! When you see someone playing it, and the rear lights are going and the cabinets throwing some poor soul about and the musics kicking out nice n loud and all hells breaking loose on screen you wish only one thing - that they die quickly and dont continue. When I climb in one and you feel the motor's starting to kick in and the machine rights itself to play mode and it starts. It feels like the game was desingend for the cab. And instead of the usual leaning you do like in any game you do it with the machine movements. The last time I played this was some 10 years ago in a crappy arcade somewhere in cornwall (where king arthurs castle or grave was - yawn). My now ex wife went and explored the ruins and i sat at this MINT (no screen burn not even a fag burn) machine and played it all afternoon. Absolute bliss, and when you get to some nice n high levels 6+ it really is pure gaming nirvana. (crap got myself worked up now... sniff) I think its that wobbly legs and that insane grin that pretty much says it all. Also Space Duel by Atari. After playing asteroids in 3D monochromavision this game totaly blew me away. Esp since you could play tactical with a mate and join your ships. The bass kicking in when the shield went on and the insane bonus levels - again a total experience. Only ever saw one of these machines ever in my home town in Lancs in some grotty arcade but it was a custome cab and again just an absolute classic experience. The list is endless but these are the two where I'd pretty much give up that dream holiday, car etc for without even a thought to where i put the cabs. |

Wow we have quite a number of space harrier fans here, thats pretty cool!!!
I never did get good at the arcade version of afterburner, my playing of it has been very sporadic due to machines breaking down and not being able to find machines etc, so thats probably why. I am not really good at any arcade game lol I did beat the console version of afterburner on the gameboy advance cart and i beat the console version of space harrier on the yu suzuki gameworks disc for dreamcast, but those are really easy to beat cause you get unlimited continues basically lol |

Long way to go for me to play Afterburner, there's one in Hunstanton Norfolk which is playable but it's got busted movement. I did ask the Arcade owner what was wrong with it, said it needed a new motor but had no intentions to replace it as it was too costly. Regards Nick |

Its a bit eaiser to find afterburner parts here, a lot of people ditch
machines so if there are needed parts you can get it from there, of
course that does mean you will probably have to take in multiple
afterburner cockpits to get the needed parts. Your playing with
time on these machines too, majority of the parts are too old to
salvage or are already worn out so much that they cant be used
anymore. I guess what i mean is there are non working
afterburner's over here to at least TRY to salvage parts from,
hehe. The going rate for a working afterburner cockpit here is
only like 200-300$.
I know of about 2-3 working afterburner cockpits in the usa, there might be a few more and the 2-3 that might be working might also not be working, hehehe, so its kind of a speculation. There are NOT that many left though in arcades still. Last time i checked was in like april/may but the afterburner cockpit located at the skylon tower was working at that time, i dont know how much longer its going to last, this machine is in canada but its very close to me. I am trying to do my best to encourage the person that is fixing it to keep it up and running, so far my efforts have been worth it. It will probably be kept there anyways, they are charging 50 cents a play right now but they said if it gets to the point where they cant get the motors to work they will just leave it as is and charge 25 cents a game. |

Sara, is the only thing putting you off getting a Deluxe Afterburner the thought of trying to get it in your house? I'm sure if someone has a manual for one we will be able to see just how it comes apart. If we can get some measurements off a real machine like how wide the middle wooden section of the cab is, we should be able to tell if it will go through one of your doors and into your house. If you can get the middle bit through, the base will probably go on it's end or side. It won't be easy but I reckon it could be done. Regards Nick |

Ahem, my parents would freak if i was to tell them i was bringing
an afterburner into the house, there really isnt anywhere to put it,
and i dont have a garage.
My room is already overflowing with console game stuffs! Also i dont think the afterburner comes apart very well, ive heard the problem with it is that the carriage part of it, or some other part of it has big axle's sticking out of it, so the thought of getting it through a normal sized door is out of the question. One person i talked to who was bringing it into his arcade had to move it through a window in the arcade and it was a major pain cause they had to have the window removed and then put it back after the machine was in the place! Best place would probably be a garage due to this, and i dont have a garage, also i would need a garage because when you take in an afterburner you have to take in more than one machine cause you will need them for parts. Ah, so your still stuck at home. When you get your own place you'll be able to have one!!! I would never have been able to get a Deluxe Space Harrier if I didn't have my own place, and now I'm building an extension cause I wound up with a Deluxe Outrun as well!!! I didn't actually plan that one it just happened!!! I also know someone who took his window out to get a Deluxe Outrun in a really small flat!!! The same guy I sold my little Mini Sitdown Space Harrier to. Regards Nick |
