The base plates are back from metal treatment (at last, these were away over a month!)

I had these clear zinc plated. I liked the idea of having brighter base plates than the standard UK model where they seem to be painted black.

The base plates were badly rusted before I sent them off, and there are still signs of pitting. Thankfully, almost all of these are on the underside of the machine so won't be seen. Also, zinc plating is a more cost effective option!

I also fitted the replacement grey matting I purchased. Again, I opted for grey to match the promotional shot of the mini cabinet (and bring things closer to the deluxe cabinet), rather than the black that it was originally in.

Remember the corroded bolts I hacksawed from the base of the machine, that originally held the base board in place? I replaced the captive nuts with new zinc plated ones.

I also had a brake pedal chrome plated, to match the accelerator pedal I got from David

Plus, my Dad reports that every single capacitor has now been replaced on the monitor.... it will need to be tested.

Stuck the vinyl side-art on. This side-art is similar to the American mini cabs, which as far as I can tell had genuine vinyl stickers. The UK cabs were stencilled.

One side went on perfectly. The other side I annoyingly had a few issues around the 'A' of the SEGA logo.

Here's a close-up. These aren't air bubbles as such as you can squeeze them out / flatten the vinyl and they vanish. They are areas where the vinyl hasn't stuck correctly and has popped up. I suspect this happened because we repositioned this corner within a few minutes of first sticking and in doing so lost the full adhesive of the glue. Grr.

My plan of action is to clamp the art into place with some perspex. I've read this can work, but I'm somewhat sceptical.

Does anyone have any advice here? I could heat this section of vinyl again and restick. What sort of glue is best?

Monitor has had every single capacitor replaced.

Some issues with horizontal width, and loss of the Blue and Green colours intermittently to figure out.

If you can help, please post in this thread.

If it keeps popping off use some spray contact adhesive then clamp it flat and leave it to cure.
Side art looks really nice on vinyl, applying full side art is never an easy job.

Thanks. Any specific brand you'd recommend?

To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure why one side had these issues and the other side was absolutely perfect. I didn't change my technique massively. Could be the adhesive, could be we somehow stretched the vinyl when applying, could be the fact we peeled and reapplied.

I find most steps of this restoration involve me cursing my handwork (or lack of it!)

I'll certainly post a full list at some point. This is the PE 07 chassis revision, which I don't think is covered by any of the existing cap-kits.

EDIT: Done, see below!

Monitor capacitor details posted here.

On the artwork side I waited around 5 days, removed the clamps and the situation has improved:

I then used a hairdryer to remove some of the remaining kinks. The results aren't OCD perfect, but they are close. Let's hope it stays this way!

i have your Reassembler blog on RSS, and i registered here at the forum to track your progress on the restoration. looks promising! i'm guessing the monitor will be the trickiest part to resolve, at this point.

The sideart was made and also printed by a Florida based chap called Rudy Benvin, who I contacted through an online forum. It wasn't cheap to import from the US, but beggars can't be choosers! I can put you in touch if necessary.

He was also willing to sell the digital files, but I figured it was safer to have him handle the whole process for me.

One interesting thing to note on the art, is that the UK stencilled art actually extends underneath the protector plates at the bottom of the cabinet. I think the original vinyl US artwork did not include this lower section. Most images of US machines I can find on the net also show the artwork not extending as close to the edges of the cabinet.

The promotional Sega shots of the cabinet show the cabinet without the side base plates, and without the control panel artwork.

You'll notice the replacement artwork also does not include the lower triangle which is partially obscured by the base plates.

Next stop: restoring the accelerator and brake assembly. But more on that soon...

Sega flyers always seem to have differences from production models. That pic also lacks the dashboard artwork that the cabs originally went out with.

Time to restore the pedal assembly! It was pretty grimy.... grease, dust and corrosion everywhere!

I dismantled the assembly and initially washed the components down with a high-powered hose in the garden!

I scrubbed everything until it positively hurt. Baby-wipes, IPA, wire wool etc.

I resprayed various components. Even the screws!

I managed to salvage almost everything. The only new part was the accelerator hinge and pin from David, as the old one was worn.

One thing I got wrong when initially reassembling, was I put the central spindle in the wrong way round. This wasn't immediately obvious, it was so covered in gunk when I disassembled I didn't take note of this, so take care!

The spindle was greased. The other accessible parts I'll grease before they go into the cabinet.

Overall I'm pretty pleased how well this turned out!

(Thanks to David for pointing this out to me politely.)

I was led into a false sense of security after finding an even primer finish was dead easy. With the satin black, getting an even finish is tough.

Overall the results are certainly good enough, considering they will be covered almost entirely by the vinyl side art. But if the side art didn't cover them, I would roller!

Next step will be fitting the rubber matt and getting the base protectors back on, which need to be picked up from plating.

I've done a whole cab with cans and it came out awesome, would recommend it with plasticote spray cans

Wow! Seriously impressed with the amount of work you've put into making this look like new. Kudos. Great thread, plenty of reference material for when (not if Angry) I eventually get my hands on one!!
